So, Mike and I just watched the Johnny Depp version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tonight. Yes, yes, I realize I should have gone to see it in a theatre like a good little girl, but for whatever reason, I just didn't get 'round to it, so there you go. Anyway, just some thoughts. I'll put them behind the cut just so people can't point at me and yell: "You spoiled the movie for me!" even though everyone who's interested in it has likely seen it by now.

I have to admit, the love actually wasn't there right away. I mean, don't get me wrong. Depp is awesome. He's a very, very talented actor (not to mention hot!) and I *loved* his outfits like there's no tomorrow. Can I have the hat and cane please? PLEASE????

Ahem.

Anyways, I was a little dissapointed in Tim Burton's take on the Willy Wonka character. Gene Wilder portrayed him as a very smart and confident man, if a little eccentric. Now, with Burton and Depp at the helm, I figured the eccentricity would be taken to totally new heights, but I didn't think the confidence would simply go away along with it. That took some getting used to, although in the end it fit rather well. I really loved the extra scenes at the end with Willy Wonka's father, and I thought it was a very interesting idea to have Charlie refuse the factory in order to stay with his parents. That really brought everything together at the end.

The effects were, of course, outrageously funny, and the clone Oompa-Loompas were hysterical. Danny Elfman also produced a wonderful musical score (not like I was expecting anything less!) and the casting seemed to be pretty well done. I thought Charlie looked a little young (although perhaps the old Charlie was simply too old?) but other than that, it was quite nice. Kudos to Helena Bonham-Carter who played a wonderful Mrs. Bucket!

Best line of the movie - Willy Wonka to Veruca: "Little girl, don't touch that squirrel's nuts!"

Now if I could just get those damn Oompa-Loompa songs out of my head before I go totally insane....
